More Than a Sponsorship: A Relationship That Lasts a Lifetime

Written by: Cheryl Smyth

When people think about sponsoring a child in Haiti, they often picture providing food, education, or healthcare. While those are all essential, child sponsorship becomes something much greater over time. It becomes a relationship—one built on encouragement, hope, and mutual love that can last for years.

For many sponsors, the journey begins with a simple decision to help. They receive a photo of a smiling child, learn about their living situation, and commit to supporting them each month. What they may not expect is how deeply that child will become part of their own story.

Through visits, photos, and updates, sponsors have the opportunity to watch a child grow. They celebrate birthdays, school achievements, and milestones together, even from thousands of miles away. Over the years, those experiences create a bond that transcends language and distance.

For the children, knowing that someone believes in them can be life-changing. A sponsor’s encouragement reminds them they are seen, valued, and loved. It gives them confidence to dream beyond their circumstances and hope for a brighter future.

In Haiti, where many families face significant economic challenges, sponsorship provides practical support that opens doors to education, nutritious meals, healthcare, and opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. But the greatest gift may be the reminder that they are not walking alone.

Many sponsors continue their relationship well beyond childhood. Some have supported the same child from elementary school through graduation. Others have had the privilege of meeting their sponsored child in person, sharing hugs during visits and creating memories that last forever. These moments often reveal what both sponsor and child have known for years—that they are more like family than strangers.

From personal experience, sponsorship has meant all of this and so much more. Our family has sponsored many children over the past 15 years, and the relationships we’ve built have become a treasured part of our lives. Thanks to the joy of cell phones, we still stay in touch with two of our sponsored children almost every day. One of our beautiful sponsored daughters, “R,” has graduated and continues to work incredibly hard, even during one of Haiti’s most difficult seasons. Watching her persevere and grow into a strong young woman has been one of the greatest blessings of our sponsorship journey. Our handsome sponsored son, “K,” is still in school, and we have the privilege of supporting and encouraging him as he works toward the finish line of his education. We look forward to the day when we can return to Haiti, celebrate both of their accomplishments in person, and rejoice in all that God has done in their lives.

What’s remarkable is that the relationship changes both lives. Sponsors frequently share that they receive just as much as they give. They gain a new perspective on gratitude, resilience, faith, and the incredible strength found in communities that continue to hope despite adversity.

Child sponsorship is not simply about meeting physical needs. It is about investing in a child’s future while building a relationship rooted in compassion and encouragement. It’s a reminder that one act of generosity can ripple across generations.

When you sponsor a child in Haiti, you’re doing more than making a monthly donation. You’re saying, “I believe in you. Your life matters. Your future is worth investing in.”

Years from now, that simple decision may be remembered not because of the money given, but because of the relationship built. Long after visits and milestones are shared, the impact remains—a lasting connection that reminds us all that love, kindness, and hope know no borders.

One sponsorship can change a life. Sometimes, it changes two.
